Hi
I can`t seem to find some information on this topis. I have a client how works in a restaurant and they deduct 40 dollars every two works for meal. This gives around 960 a year off her pay check. She says she has no choice in the matter and that she wants to deduct this amount on line 229. I am trying to find some kind of information on this subjet on CRA site but can`t seem to find anyting. I would appreciate any help on this matter.
Thanks
Julia

Her T4 has the usual figures, box 14, 16, 18 and 22. Nothing indicating box 40

I would question if the T4 was prepared properly and if the payroll function was administered properly. Sometimes a small business will do the payroll and reporting functions on their own i.e. Did the employer report employment income, net of the deduction in box 14?, and were the withholding taxes etc. based on that net amount throughout the year?

First of all Julia, it would go a long way if you crafted your question with a bit more effort. You not only need to brush up on your knowledge of the tax system but also on your communication skills. What the heck do you mean by "every two works"? And see those little squiggly lines under some of the words in your text? Although you provide inadequate information here, your client is probably referring to her cost of subsidized meals and there is no deduction available here. The restaurant's portion of the cost would also not be recorded on the T4 as it is not a taxable benefit.

Wow, I taught this forum was a place to get a little help not to get insulted. I am french and I try very hard to communicate in english. I am sorry if that is not adequate for you. Also I did look in every tax book I have in my office and also searched CRA site. I think some of us should brush up on human skills.

Sorry, no insult intended. Nevertheless, you can't "get a little help" if you can't explain the situation clearly. If anything, it will lead to incorrect responses and ultimately a disservice to your clients. Your human skills here will not help when your client is reassessed and charged with penalties and interest. English is my second language as well, so I can understand your frustrations. And I still would like to know what "every two works" means.

If you prefer and are more comfortable in French, there are French forums available.

If you are a professional, you will need to connect to the French ProFile Forums at http://community.int...unaute-profile/

If you are a lay person, you should connect to the French QuickTax (Surprise! The French product has not changed name!) Forums at http://community.int...te-impotrapide/

Please note that attempting to ask a "basic" tax question in a professional forum will very likely result in ridicule since the professionals would be upset with a lay person mis-representing themselves to the public.

Sorry I caused such a problem. I really didn't think my question was basic and I do think I can communicate in english. I always liked this forum and I never had problems in the past. I guess I need to find other places to get help.

You are welcome to use the forums however, as English is not your first language, I think you will find that the French forums more suited to your questions. Struggling in a second language isn't the easiest way to clarify a complex topic.

Equally, since you are asking a question about your personal tax return, not a tax return which you are paid for, you will find that the TurboTax forums are more suited for your question. When you are in a forum which is geared for a different level of user and a different software product, the answers will be of a different level and, quite frankly, written by people who don't get a lot of sleep at this time of year. They can be very snappy, even bitter.
