File ID - Magnetic Media or Internet Filing Slips What is this For?

Does anyone know what this number represents and how is it used?

This number gets assigned by the software to an FX file upon a successful XML build of a T4 type return. The first set of T4's that I sent were assigned a File ID of 1269. It seems now they are all being assigned the same file ID of 1265.

Considering this "File ID" is transmitted to the CRA as the 2nd line of the .xml file I thought it might be handy to know what it represents, and is it ok for multiple transmissions to have the same File ID.

I'm just a dumb old country boy but for some odd reason, when I see the name "File ID" the term 'unique' pops into my mind. Perhaps that is the reason I am a bit concerned that multiple files are being assigned the same "File ID" number.

A search through the Profile Help topics on the words File Id yields the 'no topics found' return.

Hello again!

The number is unique to each filing of that client, as it is incremented each time the XML file is built. If there are multiple filings for that client, and you are talking with the CRA, you will be able to tell which the latest filing was and what sequential order they were filed in.

The intent is not to be able to pull that file from a pool a thousand files from various different filers with that ID alone. It is meant to be able to tell one submission from another within a filing year from that one filer. However, by combining filer information like a BN with that file ID number you can narrow down any individual submission.

I hope that explanation makes sense.
