I received a letter from CRA about filing various returns, T5, T3 etc. via the internet. I can't seem to find anything in ProFile's Help about this, but I may be searching for the wrong terms.

Specifically from the CRA site:

How to file using Internet file transfer (XML)

Complete the following steps:

  • Click on Internet file transfer (XML) secure Web site on the FILE NOW page.
  • Complete the identification section.
  • Find the location of your electronic information return and attach it (for example, C:\t4Internet\return09.xml).
  • Submit your electronic information return (XML format).
  • Keep the submission number we'll give you.

Does ProFile create a *.xml file? Can someone point me in the right direction for more info within ProFile?

Thanks.

As per my conversation with Intuit support this morning, internet filing of T4' & T5's is not yet supported in the 2009.1.0 release. Within the next 2 days, an upgrade to 2009.2.0 is apparently expected to release, which will include this functionality. At this point, Profile should do most of the work for you by selecting EFILE-Internet File (this doesnt show up in the menu yet). Oddly, Profile's help topic on the issue seems to lead the reader into thinking thats its already possible - check it out for yourself in Profile help. At least this will tell you what the process WILL be...

EDIT: Go to the help for FX, then to the "Filing Slips and Summaries" topic, then click the "Internet Filing" link.

Yup, confirmed.

Just installed new release. Now there is a "Internet file slips..." option in the EFILE menu.

Hi SPG,

Actually, there was a fair amount of thought on this and we chose our selection based on what users had told us they wanted within the limits of our capabilities within the software. The considerations were different for FX than they were for T1 and T2. Much of that, if recall correctly, was around the added complexity when you have multiple slips within the same file with differing statuses. Since some offices were delegating this activity to lower-paid staff, they wanted to restrict availability to only those that were actually reviewed and ready for filing. (You can get around this restriction by using the database, I believe.)

All that aside, we'd love to automate that selection but we know printing is not a great trigger (many will print the slips out for reasons other than filing or they may review on-screen and then file before printing). If we're missing something here that can solve this please shoot me a PM.

As for your query on the fields that are being asked for by the MM errors: These are mandated by the CRA. The files will be rejected without this data (they won't pass schema validation). If I had to guess, I'd say they will make electronic slip filing mandatory sooner than later. For budgetary reasons if nothing else. You may want to start on collecting that data now....

First-time users see the things that everyone else has already worked-through and forgotten about. This experience is very valuable to us to hear. I'm going to think more about your comments and making this a less cryptic process next year. Ideally, this comes to an upgrade of the general usability for everyone. Your insights are a great start. I thank you for your time and feedback.

The CRA's documents suggest that, for this year at least, they will accept slips issued under either account. As for the RZ account number, it is not guaranteed that the extension is RZ0001 since it could also have been RZ0002.

It may be better to have the first nine digits of the BN on the issuing company screen, then on each applicable summary, allow the prepare to type the appropriate 4 digit account number (the part after RC, RT, TR or RZ.)

Poor Ida appreciates all the thought and attention my simple (I thought) query engendered.

I'm definitely going to try this now that I have a road map. Thanks for saving me from more frustration kind and compassionate SPG. That leaves me more time to write wicked new tax problems for our tax textbook.
