I did taxes this year for my daughter and her new husband. I filled everything out that was asked and they both received a refund of x amount. They have since received a letter saying they owe all that money back. Can anyone explain why? When filling out forms, They were not to get any gst rebate money although they make less than 30,000 together. I was stunned at this and can not find out why they could not receive gst rebate. :(

the cra letters and the notices of re-assessments for each taxpayer will explain where and why you prepared the returns incorrectly
otherwise, check all your returns details against the relevant sections of the income tax act to see what errors you may or may not have made

There are a couple of possibilities:

1 - You prepared the tax returns using separate files, thereby double-claiming certain credits. This would be explained on a Notice of Assessment.

2 - You did not specify a date of marital change, thereby causing the CRA to request that your daughter and her husband refund GST that they were not entitled to. This would be explained on a GST Notice.

3 - You did specify a date of marital change but your daughter and her husband neglected to inform the CRA of their marriage before tax time, thereby causing them to receive additional GST cheques which they were not entitled to. This would be explained on a GST Notice.

In effect, what does the Notice and/or Letters say?
