Careful what you wish for!
We are using a document management system and having profile do that as well is redundant! It would be great if the software arrived early, and complete!

Hey alexma6060 can you come by the office and help us rekey the work that the system just managed to corrupt/drop/screwup what ever you want to call it!
Go get yourself a toolbox, and in there put some neat multifunctioning all in Shopping network specials and then go and build a house with them. After a full business cycle tell me if you still want the special all in one do everything!
Tax prep supplies a robust product that does do many things, but each can work independently. As well, it costs somewheres around 3-4X what you paid for your profile subscription.
I an incensed that you would ask someone to do something for you before it can do the basic functions delivered on time with fewer defects!
Joe I actually miss you (Did I just posted that????)
Easter!

We decided to utilize Profile when it correctly boasted that it was ahead of the tech curve and now is it trying to rest on its laurels
At the very least allow for a pdf attachment to the notes field in the returns

Why? What purpose is that going to serve the general population?

First of all the purpose it would serve is it would allow those of us going to a "lesspaper office" to make better use of the Profile product. All we are asking is the ability to add a hyperlink somewhere in the client file. I don't believe this would cause a huge change in programming, nor do I think they would drop all of their tax programming to accomplish this task. It may not be for you, but I and a few others on this thread are part of the general population. We have a right to make this suggestion and discuss it so that Profile has an opportunity to decide if this is something that should happen.
It is unfortunate that it appears there are some on the board who insist on denigrating anyone who makes a suggestion that does not agree with their agenda. I also would like a program that works perfectly out of the box. I think we can all agree with those of you who make this suggestion but that does not mean the program should stagnate until that happens. This program has always worked well. It has never been perfect but neither has any other program I have worked with.
Yes, I too miss Joe, and his acerbic personality. I have been schooled by him more than once. I believe it is possible to be civil while showing others the errors in their logic. Telling people to not make suggestions for improvement until you have a perfect basic program is not helping anyone. Telling them this in a rude or obnoxious manner is just rude and obnoxious.
Let's all act like polite Canadians. Eh!

If you would like to add a hyperlink to the client file, it is easy to do. Use the Notes form (F4, Note, Enter) and put your hyperlink there. Remember to use the correct structure for file linking. When you want to activate the link, copy it and paste into the run command (Windows Menu, Run...) Your file will open.

I think what Tim was suggesting was to put the path to your PDF file in the notes section. To invoke it, he says that you should copy the link and paste it in the Windows Run command. I've tried putting a hyperlink (a true hyperlink) in the notes section and couldn't get it to work. Personally, I think just creating a shortcut on your desktop or taskbar to the folder holding your PDF files is easier.

I think I am going to take the approach of throwing PDF's, excel schedules, profile into a caseware document and then everything can be launched from there.
Have 26 caseware folders, one for each letter of the alphabet. My only concern is having up to a couple of dozen people in one caseware file, but I don't think it will be a problem since only links will be launched from there.

Is there a speed issue in doing this in Caseware? Also, what if you're actually working on a financial statement client in Caseware and then want to load up a T1. Do you have to close the Caseware file and reopen your Caseware file with the links in it? I'm not sure I fully understand what you're doing but have to admit I only use Caseware for the more traditional fs stuff. If it can work (well) it sounds interesting.

If you are working on financial statements (corporate year end for example) that will be a different caseware file all together, so there won't be an issue there.
I think the only speed issue may be that you have 15-20 people with the 'A' caseware file open. However I don't think this will be a problem since the only actions being performed in caseware is opening links to external progams (profile, excel, adobe, etc)

Investigate a document file manager, ie yep!, Client Tracker, one note, yojimbo. There are many on both the OSX and XP platforms to choose from. All a smaller, lighter and better setup to handle what you are looking for.
Hey, look into something called 'Rocket Matters' a web based law application that might do what you are looking for.
Good Luck

I use PaperPort right now. It seems to work well for what I am looking for. The problem I've always found with software manufacturers, including Caseware, is that they "wannabe" a document/contact manager and work centre but don't do all (or any) really well.
