We've been ignoring it... I'm just wondering if anyone here's bothering to answer it...

Youd rather pay more taxes so the Gov can employ somebody else to separately obtain and check the same information come voting time?

Its efficient to report it there...

Besides, you already have that info in your client files, right?
"Know your client"....

You assume that people actually follow up on this? I checked off "Yes" for several years before I could vote, but I still had to register manually.

And no, we don't track citizenship... what would be the point? The cost for us to do this would far exceed the nil benefit offered, and even if we had this information in our files, manually referencing each one would be decidedly inefficient.

A perhaps overly paranoid CA once told me that CRA adds and drops various questions over the years...to build a comprehensive information database about a person and their relationships. So he never, for example, (cue the music from Jaws) provided SINS of significant shareholders on corporate returns....

Am I filling this in....not deliberately... if the opportuinity exists, or I know for sure....but really....why do they want it? Well I guess because they provided so many names to Elections Canada over the years of asking that question....I'm sure many people said yes...but they may not have been elkigible to vote. So now they have to "clean it up"...

I've answered rarely but must apply a caution.

For my bankrupt clients, I consistently answer No to updating Elections Canada. Since I found that answering No there dropped any question about the Elections Canada section, I've stopped answering that question.

Now, for those I interview, I do ask but point out that it is a new question.

I do with every client. US citizens are required to file US tax returns regardless of residency as are Green Card holders so it is core to my practice. I want the US work. I actually prefer they take the Candian returns to a Canadian tax compliance firm.

But why do we have to give our Social Insurance Numbers for our Efile registration?

So that the CRA can verify that we are in compliance with tax legislation which is part of the suitability screening.
