Let me begin with a couple of compliments. ProFile v2007 loads much faster than previous versions. I have already had several staff members comment on this. Also, your efforts to limit the requirement to reboot the computer after installation are also appreciated. I hope that the QuickBooks team can duplicate your results. However, I am writing to express my dismay at the information presented in the v2007 - What's New under the subject "Simplified ProFile Installation".

First is the matter of Access Codes. Whether the Access Code is provided during the installation process or during the first attempt to open the program is actually much less of a problem than the recording of subsequent Access Codes. The Help > License section of the program is password protected. In order to update the Access Code for all of our ProFile installations, it is therefore necessary for someone who is authorized to know the Options Password to visit every desk and enter the new Access Code. As far as I can see, the "No Access Code entry during installation"decision doesn't really help anyone. But I would be happy to hear from anyone else who can tell how this change is of any significant benefit.

Second, and in my opinion this is a mistake, the requirement to install ProFile on our file server in order to deploy and manage the Client Explorer Server. While I agree that the Client Explorer Server in it's present form is unfriendly and difficult to manage, it is still preferable to installing the entire ProFile application on the file server. It's a good thing that there have been efforts to limit the number of reboots when installing ProFile because the idea of bouncing a file server because of a ProFile update, which may not even provide any additional Client Explorer server functionality or performance improvements, is highly undesirable. We aren't a big office but accomplishing a server bounce when there are as many as 30 users connected from 6:00 AM to midnight gets to be a bit of a challenge. A better plan would be to put a GUI on the current Client Explorer Server and give the program some more administrative capabilities. Installing ProFile on a file server for the sake of Client Explorer Server is like install MS-Office on a file server to open a txt file. I hope that someone will be able to tell me why this change is necessary and/or desirable.

Hey dbromley,

I never reboot when installing ProFile. I just click cancel. Always have, even on server installs. Never had a problem.
