A client calls this morning and says, John, you were right...I got a bunch of T3's in the mail (he's renovating his house, moved temporarily, and had his mail held.) So I say, no problem Stu, fax em over, or scan them in and email them as pdf's ..... 2 minutes later my fax machine begins to receive, and in the middle of an eventual 27 foot fax (yeah, with all the supplementary pages detailing monthlies etc) I get a phone call from Stu's secretary, asking me if I'm having a problem with my fax machine.
Turns out my fax line is busy receiving T3's from another client...who BTW sent me a bunch more T3 slips just the other day....he will end up with about 30 T3s this year between himself, his wife and two kids....and dozen or so non registered (....wraps, options, income, growth) brokerage accounts....
Yes I'm behind the "give us these &(*&( T3's earlier!!!! movement

I agree. I am changing my fax machine to one that will send the fax to my email as a PDF. will save scanning the info later. Now if I could get the clients to fax all the info I could save a lot of time.

Actually, I am purchasing a new printer (multi function machine); because, I need something with some printing power.
I prefer Lexmark printers and I have the X642 already; however, it can only scan one side of the page at a time; however, my next purchase will be the X644 or X646. which can scan both sides.

I am sure there are many (possibly cheaper) multi-function/fax machines that can forward faxes to you email.

1) I'm on board with the idea to rationalize the T3 slip dates issue -- especially when there are personal trust T3 returns to file by the same deadline date as the issuers of the T3's the personal trust is awaiting to determine it's taxable income!
2) I have recently switched to telusfax service (on recommendations originating in part from this forum), and have two problems with it. I'm curious if Bert or others have encountered these, and how you dealt with them, or if I'm being sold a crock by telus tech support in one case, by telus marketing in the other case.
In any case, the problems are significant enough to give anyone considering telusfax service pause until these are resolved.
Problem 1 (huge!) -- telusfax service (maybe also similar services from other providers?) relies (according to telus tech support) on a dedicated fax line/machine at the other end. If the number you are sending to has a fax on a shared phone/fax line and the machine relies on an incoming signal to tell it that a fax and not a telephone call is coming in, it cannot identify and receive faxes sent via telusfax service. This is common in my market area with many micro-businesses that do not have dedicated fax lines.
Problem 2 (relatively minor but hugely annoying) -- when I signed up I was given an 866 toll-free number as a "bonus", even though I said I didn't want/need it. Accepted it anyway, advised all my clients my new fax number -- and then discovered I couldn't receive faxes from outside Canada or US! Telus solution? They offered me an additional non-toll-free fax service AT THE REGULAR PRICE to accomodate the "foreign" faxes I occasionally have to get, or to again change my fax service to a different non-toll-free number to accept faxes regardless of origin -- but advising my clients all over again of yet another fax number change. Not good. I want them to allow faxes from anywhere on the 866 number, but they claim it cannot be done.
I've temporarily lived with both problems by keeping my "old" fax machine and temporarily plugging it in to my phone line when I have to deal with either of the above problems -- but that sort of defeats the supposed convenience of going to the telusfax service in the first place.

1. Not sure why. Although with Winfax, which I used until I switched, some fax machines could not accept...
2. I still use my old fax number, and utilize a permanent call forward, so this problem does not arise.
Might have a concern though, will have to wait till I get the bill, with the number of pages coming through on my fax, as anything over 200 is billed by the page....

Ma Bell has a nice system "fax to email" A separate telephone line, the fax goes directly to your email account. No fax machine needed, you can print to your regular printer, forward it as you please.
Not sure of the particulars, $$ etc, that is in my office, but I know it did not affect my phone bill that much.

You receive notification just like any other email. No software involved.
Very nice, I will be getting one each for the staff.

MTS (in Manitoba) gave me a quote of $5,000 to setup a system that does not even have the functionality I have. My setup has cost me approx. $1,500 including a new computer, which not everyone would need. And, monthly phone charges, before long distance, have dropped from $350 to $100. That's for a 3 line system, plus fax.
The biggest drawback is that you want to get someone who knows what they are doing to set it up. Voice quality depends a great deal on a reputable supplier. I had some trouble with that earlier, but now my voice quality is on par with MTS.

Me2...
I received three calls yesterday from different clients informing me they had just received additional T3 supplementaries in the mail.
All three were from the Canfor Pulp Income Fund via RBC Investments.

Can they at least not send all the stupid things at the same time?
Oh yes, I need to speak to Bert (and no one else). Have another slip... What a nuisance, this is my third trip in.

And CIBC Wood Gundy has to be amongst the worst offenders...
Oh, and did I mention my frustration with the CIBC T5008, which tells you everything except what we need to know....

I think I cured the problem with this down here. How much to do a basic tax return $45.00. How much for John and do a basic tax return $55.00.
Krista is swamped with work, I am free to do T2's and year ends.
