Any ideas? The guys in support were not helpful so you are my last chance
database is ~400 per year
I think you will need to provide more information regarding your system
Computer details? (operating system, RAm, harddrive size, space available, system resources avaialble when using profile etc)
Are you networked? if yes which type, server details etc

WinXP Pro, 2MB Ram, 60GB HDD. Profile and the printing software are the only programs on this laptop. No inet, no networking.
Thanks

Click Ctrl-Alt-Del and the task manager will pop up click on the processess tab. You should see profile running. Save a file and see what happens to the memory of the computer. Does Profile start increasing in memory usage?
You may need to uninstall profile and try reinstalling the program.

got 2 gB on mine.
probably a hp (horsepower) problem, also considering it is a laptop. What kind of processor?
Dani probably means 2gig of ram. XP likes at least 128meg of ram and won't even let you install the o/s with less than a 64meg stick.
Considering the size of the HDD (60gig) I'd say the laptop is less than 3 years old...... so it probably has a fairly beefy processor (>2,000mhz) too.

I would agree, that the laptop is newer. I would suspect that something is taking up the system resources on the computer. It could be a virus and/or spyware that is causing the problem; however, we do not have any information regarding that. It also could be the garbage that some of the computer companies install on the computers before they send it to you. Watch out for the google toolbar.....

I'm afraid to ask how you know about the 64megs... my phones have had more memory than that for years.
My general process for new PCs (or formatted old ones) is to remove all movie & music players, remove all non-driver software, kill the fruity XP styles and animations, then add the following:
Symantec AV (nightly scan)
Spybot (nightly scan)
Firefox (No Internet Explorer of any version!!!)
Locked HOSTS file
MPlayer & Foobar2000 (to cover media needs)
PDF Converter (for printing to PDF)
And the usual accounting software
All of my systems run smoothly for ages without needed tinkering. The trick is to do maintenance rather than recovery.
Spyware loves Windows, so be proactive.

Well....... when I was a frosh at the UofW in 1985 64 megs would have nearly filled a lecture hall ....... or was that 64 kegs..... been so long I forget now. :P
Incidently..... I was looking up some 1994 V-day values of publicly traded shares earlier today... happened to save the February 23rd, 1994 Globe and Mail Report on Business Section.
On page B9 Dell has a quarter page ad with the Heading KICKBUTT which is an advertisement for their Dimension 466 XPS System.... starting at $3,699 (CRT monitor excluded obviously).
- 8MB of RAM
- 450MB hard drive
- 128KB external cache
- 1MB video RAM
- MS-DOS 6.0/Microsoft Windows 3.1
200 bucks extra would get you a full 16MB of RAM.. how cool is that? http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e298/snowplowguy/SMILIES/beerme.gif
The catch line.......
"You might think you've been clippin' along with your trusty desktop system. Well, sit down in front of one of these babies and find out what speed is all about. Starting with that sweet little 66MHz i486 system that kicks you-know-what over the other i486 systems."

Symantec AV (nightly scan)
...... and you were teasing me for being outdated....... lol..... no self respecting network admin would install Norton antivirus on a system they had charge over. That's like using a hockey net to catch mosquitos. :P
How many MHz does it take to load up symantec bloatware nowadays?

it's the same. and it is 2 GB, the new Clevo 17"" 57AV. As I said no any program expect last updates, Profile and Samsung 1710 printer soft.
In the task manager the is no increase in memory usage, but sometimes when I hit ctrl-alt-del the loptap sudenly unfreases.
Go figure Clean install, inet just for the windows and profile updates and still problems. My old Presario has my database since 1999 (over 2000 files) and works as speedy gonzales and the new one is lasking.

I purchased a 486DX266 computer with 8 meg of ram (standard at the time was 4) 80 meg harddrive (standard was 40) with MS dos 5.0 and paid around $4,000 including a monitor. I was up grading from my Commodore 128.
Technical overview of the C128
The C128 was a significantly expanded, and compatible, successor to the earlier C64. The new machine featured 128 KiB of RAM (externally expandable to 640 KiB) and an 80-column RGB monitor output (driven by the 8563 VDC chip with 16 KiB dedicated video RAM), as well as a redesigned case/keyboard with a numeric keypad. Instead of the 6510 CPU of the C64, the C128 incorporated a two-CPU design. The primary CPU, the 8502, was a slightly improved version of the 6510; its main addition was the ability to run at a 2 MHz clock rate (however, this required turning off the 40-column video output). The second CPU was a Zilog Z80 which was used for ensuring CP/M compatibility and for mode-selection of the computer upon boot-up. The two processors cannot run concurrently, thus the C128 was not a multiprocessing system.

Have you tried reinstalling Profile from the complete download instead of the internet update?

Prior to that I used the computers in the business school at MUN. The old Apple computers. Beautiful little devils they were.
I still remember the look on her face.....she did not expect that. One of the first things we did on the internet together was download Don MacLeans American Pie. Her high school teacher had it all wrong, we set out to prove it. Ah, memories

Fair enough... I'm not gonna defend Symantec. Personally I don't use any anti-virus or anti-spyware at home, as I have no need to. You'll find you spend much more time computing rather than maintaining when your run Linux (mainly SuSE 10.1 right now) B) . As such, I don't much care about AV options.
Do you have a better suggestion to fill in the Windows gaps re:virii?
