All it will do is delay the inevitable, and give procrastinators more time
Give accountants a longer and bigger headache, imagine doing tax returns well into May....
Not that I care one whit about golf...
To accountants in tax practice, April 30 (and some years May 1 or May 2) is tax freedom day.
May 1 is the accountants' national holiday!
Let's squash any talk of extending the deadline.

I could see if there was some major flaw in the tax returns that required fixing or something that would take people away from filing, but come on....other than people not getting their refunds, this problem is only a problem to the tax preparers.

However..... some of us may run into some unexpected issues ourselves arising from this computer outage..... as I was reminded yesterday.
Any Canadian who has not spent the last week in a cave has come to learn they can not file their T1 returns electronically until the system becomes operational. I am starting to field calls from clients asking whether they should still bring in their returns now or hold off until they hear the CRA computers are back online. I'm not worried about these clients not coming in....... I'm just concerned about them all showing up at once...... say in about 3 weeks.
I expect for every call I get asking this question....... a dozen won't call...... but will decide themselves to wait until they learn that efile is open for business.
Depending on how long the system is down...... this could be the calm before the storm. :)

I would agree. do not extend the filing deadline. I have other work to do in May.

In the Winnipeg Free Press Today
Tax deadline stays
SASKATOON -- While a computer glitch that is preventing people from filing their taxes online is "a very serious problem," it doesn't mean the deadline for filing a return will be extended, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Friday.
"All I can say is, we're obviously . . . on the backs of the department to get on with fixing this problem as soon as possible," Harper said.
The glitch at the Canada Revenue Agency shut down the system that accepts online tax returns sometime Sunday night or Monday morning.
If the PM say so then it must be right. ;)

From the several hundred clients that I see each tax season, most come in at the same time each year. I can predict who will be here on February 15, March 15 and so on. I know that the sloths who come on the last two days of the filing season will come on May 6 if they hear the deadline is extended. I have one guy who for the last 10 years shows up around 3pm on the very last day. He doesn't call to make an appointment but I know that he will be coming and pencil him in anyway.
And, I will have a Bacardi Black or maybe a good Polish vodka.

All the extension will do is grant the slackers among my clients another reason to put it off.
I plan on being anywhere but my office for the first week of May and nothing CRA can do will change that
Just my two cents worth

Just tell your clients that your filing deadline is April 30 per usual. If they want to file after just triple the price.
