Thank you so much for responding so quickly.

I still cannot log on, and I am backlogged with clients.

On February 16, 2007, I sent one Efile through to ascertain that everything was OK.

It was accepted, and the Efile Help Desk aknowledge that they did receive it.

I only file "one at a time", not "batch".

I use Bell Sympatico, and it works fine for everything else.

My computer is "State of the Art" Dell.

I use Windows XP Pro.

My ProFile version is the latest one, and I did make certain that ProFile has access through my Norton firewall. I even tried by disabling Norton entirely, but that made no difference.

My ProFile T1 indicates that everything is OK with the returns. I am trying six different ones which are routine and simple. The message I get from my software is "Website Unavailable".

I have rebooted many times.

I have spoken several times to the Efile Help Desk. They see no indication that my system has attempted to connect with them, except for the February 16th connection. They have even issued me with a new password, and I waited the required two hours for it to "take", but still, I cannot connect.

What bothers me, however, is that there are two ProFile issues as to where the problem may be. I indicated them to the ProFile support rep, but he did not have answers, and did not attempt to get answers.

The issues are;

When I try to connect to Efile, the ProFile blank screen which usually confronts us and then changes to a CRA connection screen, shows, next to the print icon, another icon which is a small red circle with a white cross through it. It seems to me so similar to the familiar Norton Alert. I have never noticed this icon in past years. What does it represent? Why is it there?

Another issue, which I indicated to the support rep. Under Efile reports, I can only see listed my submission, successful, and my numerous unsuccesful attempts. This is very unlike prior years, where various other Efile reports were available. I cannot elicit a report for the successful transmission, but Efile have aknowledged that it has been received.

I have several times used the Efile wizard, and several times made sure that I am using the default URL, which I have read out to the Efile Help Desk staff.

Right now I am stuck.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Nick, did you not get the email from CRA that they are having technical difficulties?

Hey Nick,

I doubt it is ProFile that is causing your problem. It looks like the software can't get out to the web to even transmit the return.

Go into your control panel and choose administrative tools. Click services and stop anything related to norton and or symantec. This includes pop up blockers/spam filters if applicable. Then try ProFile again. I've found with the A/V software that you usually need to turn off the service as well as disabling it in your systray.

The red dot with white x comes up as malware in Google, so you might want to run a program like adaware, spybot seek and destroy or hijack this.

I suspect you aren't getting reports from efile because the process isn't even getting started, but I could be wrong.

Are you able to access the Efile-online site manually (through your web browser) Nick?

I really appreciate you all trying to help me.

Since I am not Tech savvy, I need all the help I can get.

The problems at CRA, as far as I understand are with "Batch" and "Send", only.

I am trying to do T1 "One at a Time".

I downloaded the latest Norton definitions and did a full system scan. No spyware or anything was found.

The latest edition of "Defender" was also run and came up empty.

Then I followed Mr Jarret's suggestions to turn everthing off as far as Firewalls from Windows and the Defender system and all Norton and Symantec, using the Control Panel.

Then I tried again. Still I was unable to connect to CRA.

I used the URL for the CRA website to try and connect directly and got Porn. I tried over and over again......only Porn.

I went back to Control panel to turn everything back on, and I am unable to enable Norton.

So, for now, it seems, I have gone backwards.

Help!

Appears your computer mas become infected....... someone may have been surfing in a bad neighbourhood without protection (no..... norton A/V is not very good protection).

If your system will still allow (depending on the trojan) ..... try to restore your registry to an earlier date (system restore)....... although many viruses (apart from neutering your A/V software) will also shut down the system restore function too.

Good answer Bert., but in all truth if all your getting is porn,( hope it is free porn) then your computer is infected with some trojan of some type, and this Trojan is used.

Once a trojan gets behind a virus checker or firewall, it is very hard to kill.

My other computer in my office my darling children went on it. Of course they never downloaded anything or went to a web site they shouldnt have ended up with major problems with all programs including Profile not wanting to work.

I completely re formated the hard drive and started the computer from scratch. Reloaded programs, everything.

I was running firewalls, virus scanners etc

It now works like a charm and childrens fingers stay off it.

Yeah SPG is right, and David you probably went too far in a full re format.

This happened to my kid's computer as well. I used my own computer to go to the Symantec site and they had a fix for the problem which involved downloading a file from their site, and transfering it to the infested system via a disk...

The disk neutralized the browser hijack and allowed the virus definitions to update...but all the real problems had to be dealt with manually. There was a step by step procedure that involved editing the registry.

It took me almost a full day to clean their system up, and I don't wish it on anyone...

I suppose I will have to go to Norton for tech support to find out how to enable Norton again. It seems like a strange situation, but I have exhausted my brain. Fortunately, that did not take very long.

On the bright side, I think Mr. Jarrett has found the location of the problem with efile.

You see, whenever I type in th Efile URL, I get porn.

If i click on the Efile URL suggested by snowplowguy, I get porn.

However, when I use ProFile with a tax return and try to Efile it, it should be addressing the same URL and giving me porn...but it doesn't. It tells me that that particular URL is unavailable.

Profile tells me that it is able to connect to the internet, but the site is "Down".

Could somebody try to see if it really is down, for me, please? All I get is Porn.

I suppose the real problem is as Mr.Jarrett has suggested, ProFile isn't really trying to connect to CRA to Efile my returns.

That brings me right back to my original problem. ProFile is not working properly for me, I guess.

Thank you again.

If you shoot a horse, at least you can eat it. What do you do after you shoot your computer?

Formatting and reloading your computer will be quicker than trying to get anything out of Norton tech support..... good luck though.

Right..... if you're lucky..... it is just your web browser that has been hijacked. Whether the efile site is up or down you have bigger problems to deal with.

Like I said earlier...... try a "system restore" to an earlier date..... hopefully a date that was prior to your computer becoming infected. If the trojan took out your system restore function I'll see if I can dig up a couple of online virus scan url's.

Hey Nick,

Looks like your browser has been hijacked. Download this program and install it, then run it. Choose to do a system scan and create a log file. If you want, email me the file and I can give you further instructions.

The fix is usually easy, and save you paying symantec some cash.

If you don't want to email me the file, I understand. You can always do a search on the web for instructions, but this should clean off your system for you.

I don't think I would wish to try to fool around with the Registry. I just do not have enough knowledge.

If I try the Registry Restore function, should I update my Documents back up first?

I assume the Registry Restore does not affect my data, but, I am uneasy about this situation.

I could go see, or bring in a tech guy, but, What about all my customer Tax data????

ARGHHH!!!

Your suggestions are most helpful to me. Thank you for taking the time, I know you are busy.....I'm drowning.

The system restore function will not affect your files...... it only restores the 'windows registry' to an earlier date. If you have installed any software...... it will be affected..... but it won't change any data you have worked with in the meantime.

In any event....... system restore gives you the option to 'unrestore' afterwards per chance you feel you lost something in the restore. It is fairly safe in that respect.

Also...... if you create a 'restore point' now....... prior to going back and restoring to an earlier date...... you can always restore back to the point you just created.

I did a download of HijackThis, and saved the scan logfile and printed it.

It is 5 pages.

There is a list on my computer screen right now, with open check boxes on the left hand side of things for me to check off.

I tried printing the list with Control P, but that did not work.

What is it that I should send you?

Can I fax the five page log, and to what number?

Sorry, I'm not usually so dumb, I'm just over my head right now.

Hey Nick, you can copy and paste it in here if you want. I checked and there isn't any client or personal info that needs to be worried about.

I don't know what to send you.

Do you want the logfile of HijackThis?

Do you want the screen that I have where I should check off what to fix?

I will have to fax, I'm having difficulty in getting either one of these documents onto a screen where there is "edit" capability.

Do yoy have a fax number?

The logfile should be a text file. Can you attach it and email it to me? It should save in the folder where you installed it to.
