Has any thought been given to creating a "dynamic link" to Profile from programs such as CaseWare?
The user could specify CaseWare client file in Profile. Profile could then access the CaseWare database for the GIFI codes and ask the user if he/she wants to update when the file is opened, with a refresh function for changes made while both files are open.
It seems that this, combined with the "Complete return from GIFI" function, would streamline the process and make many of us much happier about having to take the time to fill in the GIFI codes...

Another program suggestion - GIFI

Hi Matthew,
Thanks for your suggestion. Since most of our T2 development takes place in the spring and summer I will keep it in mind for that next season.
For the time being I suspect we will be employing the same export feature from Caseware as before to import the completed GIFI schedules in our T2 module. While this is a "snapshot" from the Caseview file and not a dynamic link like you're suggesting it still significantly decreases the time it takes to complete a GIFI compliant T2. This snapshot import is also available from any other software that produces a standard GIFI export file.
We are always looking to improve our software and your suggestion is appreciated.

Hi Helga,
The way things work right now is that there is a standardized export format for GIFI data.
This allows software developers to share this data without having to collaborate with each individual company.
At the moment I know that Caseware and Simply Accounting both have implemented this industry standard.
I do not have a copy of Quickbooks so I can't say for sure whether you can export GIFI information from that package already or not.
If your version of Quickbooks produces a standard GIFI export file then we can import that into our system.
I hope this helps you. If you would like any additional information please contact me.

Further to Lee's comments, Quickbooks exports GIFI information in a proprietary format, not the standard CCRA format. Therefore, there is no import capability in ProFile T2 at this time. However, we are aware of this and is one of the development issues we'll (i.e. Intuit Canada and Intuit GreenPoint) be looking at next year.

I had anticipated that the GIFI would be utilized throughout the T2 and the CT23. Currently, there are a lot of redoing when importing the GIFI. For example, the notes checklist has to be redone everytime I re-import. I think that the checklist should not be affected by an import routine saving me having to redo work. The GIFI, whether snapshot or dynamic should filter right through the complete federal and provincial tax return. Schedule 8 changes should be corresponded to the provincial counterpart. The capital tax field should be updated via GIFI. This makes sense in my mind and, although I do not do full time programming, I believe that linking fields should be routine programming functions. Can we have this?

Greetings Domenic,
I will take a look at why the notes are reset each time the import is done for GIFI. We should be able to fix this easily.
I could not tell from your post whether or not you were already using our GIFI transfer option we implemented in our last release of the T2. If not, you may want to give that a try by selecting it in the Filing section of the Info form.
We tried to transfer the most common data throughout the return. We found certain forms (such as capital tax) would only be partially completed by this process. Some of these were judiciously left out of the transfer process to avoid confusion.
I'm not sure what you were looking for with schedule 8 values in regards to GIFI. If you override a federal value on schedule 8 make sure you also do the same in the appropriate provincial column or it will not change for the province. You will find the federal and provincial columns in the class detail schedules by drilling down (F6) on the class on S8.
If you would like to go over this or any other matters please feel free to email me at lmckenzie@greenpointsoftware.com
